On August 10, 2011 Adrienne Hancock-Leong had a serious riding accident that has left her in a coma. She was riding a very reliable horse, and it appears that the horse may have stumbled and she fell off of him. There were workers nearby in the same barn who found her a few minutes later. She suffered a severe head injury and broken ribs. She was taken to University Hospital where she underwent brain surgery. She spent five weeks in the ICU where she also battled a significant infection, blood pressure problems, and continued swelling in her brain. Despite all of these issues, Adrienne is a fighter and has made great progress! Her neurological status has improved very slowly each week. Although she never regained consciousness after the fall and is still considered to be in a coma, she is now able to move her right arm and hand very purposefully. She touches her face, squeezes the hand of visitors, and tries to reach for the nurses when they are working with her. She is awake during the daytime hours and tracks people by moving her eyes. She is now in a regular hospital room and preparing to be transferred to an outpatient brain injury rehab facility. There has been so much love and support expressed for Adrienne and Stonehurst since the accident through cards, visits to the hospital, and various fundraising efforts.
One such effort is the establishment of the Arabian Horseman’s Helmet Alliance. This organization was established to raise awareness of the importance of helmet safety and to raise funds to support Adrienne’s recovery. The group created a helmet lapel pin with the letter “A” for Adrienne and is selling these items at Sport Horse Nationals, on E-Bay and Facebook, and at other shows and events. In addition to this Alliance and pin sales, we have a number of other groups to thank: Kentucky Horse Supply for offering a Fall Family Horse Festival, the Rushlow and Rooker families for a fundraising bake/bracelet sale, Kentucky Arabian Horse Association for hosting a silent auction at their general meeting in November, and many others who have volunteered their time and energy to support the work of SRC and Adrienne’s recovery.
Further updates on Adrienne’s progress and these efforts will be posted on the Stonehurst Facebook page. Thank you again for your support, prayers, and concern for Adrienne and the Stonehurst family.
